Cultural Competence: From Awareness to Application

The notion that diversity is a reality of life, and work has been embraced by most. And more than ever, organizations in all industries declare that the respect and appreciation for all differences is in the business best interest. Why then, the tension that those differences produce has not decreased? Why does the goal of creating inclusive work environments still seems elusive? It certainly is not because lack of awareness. Everywhere we look we are reminded of the growing diversity in our communities and work places. And everyday more professionals find themselves interacting with people from different countries and cultures. There is no lack of awareness about differences.

What is missing is the capacity to identify what differences have an impact in a particular situation, and the ability to adjust our behavior to get the desired result for everyone. We need to move from awareness to application. What makes a difference is not that we understand we should be sensitive and flexible. It is what we decide to do and when and how we do it. This is what cultural competence means.

Employee Resource Groups: Innovation, Value and Impact

This session will present an overview of the recent and future population changes in the United States. These patterns show that Latinos represent the engine of the demography of the United States. Despite the importance of Latinos for the nation’s future population and economy, Latinos continue to be underrepresented in leadership positions. The session will stress the need to groom and develop Latino leaders across the vast sector of organizations and corporations.
