Phillip W. Schnarrs, Ph.D., received his Ph.D. in Health Behavior with an emphasis in Social Justice and Health Equity from The Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington. He is currently an Associate Professor at The University of Texas at San Antonio and an Interdisciplinary Research Leaders Fellow with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He has extensive experience using community-based participatory research to develop, implement, and sustain community driven LGBTQ+ focused initiatives.
Much of his work uses an assets-based approach to better understand the strengths a community has in order to create social and political change. He is currently working with Dr. Amy Stone (Trinity University) and Mr. Robert Salcido (The Pride Center San Antonio), on a project funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to better understand queer resilience across race, ethnicity, and gender-identity in order to create a more resilient LGBTQ+ community in San Antonio. In addition to his work on queer health, Dr. Schnarrs also focuses on access to, and utilization of, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention among racial and ethnic minority men who have sex with men.
Phillip is also a board member of Out Youth, an LGBTQ youth advocacy non-profit serving Central Texas, and the President and co-founder of the LGBTQ Faculty and Staff Association at The University of Texas at San Antonio.
